World of Conflict! RTS into a New Era?! Print E-mail

Hey hey you DragonHuggers, KitchenMagicians and BathroomWarriors!!!


Me and the guys (n gals) from the Media department have been out and about to find you guys the coolest games and to write some nice pre and reviews! Today I got a nice preview on a very special game in the making…
This RTS, it is said, will turn RTS as we know it upside down and might even become the Battlefied

equivalent of the RTS community!!! So hear hear and pay attention!!  Because World in Conflict is gonna blow your socks off….

The higher Ground:
As said there is a new RTS on the Horizon with a load of very special and completely new features regarding RTS.
The game is called World in Conflict and it’s being produced by Massive Entertainment, whom are also renowned for their Ground Control series. However this time the RTS they are building is rather Ground Breaking!!



Conflict in what world?
World in Conflict is set in an ‘alternate’ present day scenario. The Second world war didn’t take place, but as a result the Soviet Union has invaded the USA and is trying to conquer the Western World as we know it today. You are a General with the command of all the late 20th century War machines and troops you can fathom and your only goal is to eradicate the enemy! It’s an all out war between the NATO, USA vs the USSR aka Soviet Union and the price is World Domination!
First thing that becomes clear is that not only is the setting ‘present day’ and thus realistic (as far as a game can be) but the graphics are mind stunning! Everything is shown as crystal clear and as realistic as they could have possibly done. It’s simply stunning to watch the game unfold, you feel like you’re on the battlefield yourself or atleast watching an HD movie.
Mind you everything within the world is destructible and the special effects are fantastic. The climax that wet my pants was when I saw the result of fireing a Nuke at the enemy. The explosion is an orgasm on itself. Everything from blinding light, to shockwave to mushroom cloud and even the total destruction and blackened earth in it’s wake are perfect!

C&C  Zerg?
But what’s possibly the best about World in Conflict is the setup. This game is not about building a base fast, getting endless resources and put your factories up for endless production.. no sir no.. Actually there is nothing remotely resembling a base in the game! No buildings, no building.. no nothing. What you get is pure hard-on action!
The player starts out with a basic set of points and the possibility to choose a specialty. Each specialty (or special General) has special abilities and gets certain types of troops for a cheaper price. Everything you buy/deploy onto the battlefield is payed for from your basic set of points! So think well on how you spend it, because once spent it is gone, untill the bought troops are destroyed. But even then the points return to your pool slowly! So lost troops mean a chink in your armor which can’t be instantly replaced! All troops are good against one kind of enemy and totally crap against another, so it’s all about strategy. Fortunately you can switch your specialty mid-game, however keep in mind the troops you’ve got deployed can’t be instantly replaced if you loose them!



Can I play this with my Clanbuddies?!

Hell yeah! You can!! The multiplayer part of this game is probably gonna give lots of people a new flagpole to carry into battle!
The game supports up to 16 players, so that’s 8 players on each team. Considering the strategic possibilities and the special ‘generals’ you can choose this offers great possibilities for teamplay!
Massive entertainment also loaded the game with clan possibilities. For example VOIP is installed as well as many ways of communication. Special ‘reinforcement points’ or ‘tactical aid’ points can be acquired by taking special tactical points on the map.
These points can be given to your teammates or they can give theirs to you, that way you can achieve the highest possible ‘tactical aids’ like a tactical Nuclear bomb for example or clusterbomb bombardement!
All in all the game was made as much for multiplay and clans as it was for single player pleasure and all I can say is “this is one to watch guys!!!”
